artistic practice
alexandra von braun is a visual artist based between italy, germany and the united states, whose work develops from a disciplined engagement with presence. her background in performance, theatre, and film shapes an attention to gesture, temporality, and the quiet weight of the body within space.
working primarily with ink on paper, she adopts a deliberately reduced vocabulary: black and white, minimal tools, restrained marks. this limitation is not an aesthetic preference but a method. by removing excess, she creates conditions in which attention can settle and perception can become more precise.
each work begins as an act of presence. the gesture is performed in a state of focused awareness, and the surface records that condition rather than illustrating an image. repetition, series, and controlled variation translate time into form and reveal the subtle changes that occur when the body remains within a single, continuous action.
her practice extends beyond the page into spatial and sensorial installations. suspended papers, slight movements of air, and long resonant tones introduce minimal phenomena that shift the viewer’s perception. these environments do not seek immersion or spectacle; they quietly call the viewer back to their own physical presence, to breath, posture, and attention.
underlying the work is a clear critique: the contemporary drift toward disembodiment and inattentiveness. the works do not denounce this condition; instead, they propose an alternative. through restrained materials and simple gestures, von braun creates spaces where the viewer may recognise their own absence and re-enter a state of presence.
rather than constructing narratives or symbolic images, her practice opens a field of observation. it asks how a gesture inhabits time, how a surface can hold it, and how an environment can support a more attentive experience of being.
